By definition a reality check is “an occasion on which one is reminded of the state of things in the real world.” Well I think I had several of them in just one week !
Up until Thursday everything seemed normal, I would go about my normal day routines and
wine down, study in the evening. But I recently came across a really frustrating news on TV. You probably heard about it too!
1. The Slavery of Black Africans in Libya! For those of you who don’t know. Africans are still being sold and forced into harsh labor somewhere in Libya. And who knows where else?! This is outrageous and awful! I am not going to go into it right now, this would a whole blog post for another day. But I was shocked to see how inhuman people still are. How can you sell another human beings just because of their skin color?! I mean we have been through this for 400 years and you mean to tell me that’s not enough?!
I was so frustrated, I cried so many times after watching videos and reading stories of the survivors. This made me realize how much hatred and disregards some people still have towards Black people, particularly Africans. But why tho?! Listen, all we want is our own happiness & success; that’s it! We are not trying to harm anyone. What is so difficult to understand? I know some of you probably won’t understand but just picture people from your country, or just your relatives, being sold for $400 or less in live auctions and mistreated in every way possible. Awful !
Pause, let’s take a deep breath…
2. Another reality check: Being successful doesn’t only require determination and perseverance; it takes focused efforts and discipline. Lately I realized that my academic grades were falling, nothing major but still. Since I had no one to blame it on, I had ask myself the hard questions. What am I not doing right? What’s going on? Then I realized my focus has shifted. These past few weeks, I’ve been into growing as a Blogger, as a YouTube Creator, along with working on multiple projects, so much so that I’ve dedicated less time for studying. And it showed through my results. If you spread yourself so thin, doing a million things at a time; your focus will shift, and so will your outcomes. This is true in academics, career, business and entrepreneurship, personal life, etc… Focus on mastering one thing, before you jump to the next. Plus, I don’t about you but I’d rather be great at one thing than be average in many things.
3. Anybody who knows me, know that I love being spontaneous. I think it makes things more interesting & fun. But sometimes, spontaneity can be costly! Especially when your life is moving at 100 miles per hour and you have 35 deadlines due in 3 weeks. “Failing to plan, is planning to fail.” I knew this, but I have a couple challenges when it gets to the practice part. OK no more excuses.
What about you, did reality check on you too?
if yes, what did you learn? Share it with me and the Golden’s family!
