It All Starts With Your Mindset

Before you start your weight loss journey, you will need to evaluate your mindset first. Weight loss is more a mental battle than a physical battle! Before I started my journey, I needed to make sure I wanted to lose weight for me, for my own health. I didn’t want to do it because of the amount of pressure I have been getting from family members and friends, or even societal standards.

Last summer when I went to Benin (West Africa), I received lots of negative comments about my weight gain and most of those comments came from family members (Aunt, Cousins, even my Dad). I can understand that they haven’t seen me since I was 16 years old (when I was slim). I guess they were expecting to see the same girl with the same height, same weight, same mentality , same everything.

To their surprise I was not! I have changed a lot over the years, especially physically. But I was comfortable in my skin. Yes ! I was chubby and content my weight. I felt confident enough not to let those negative comments bother me. However, I must admit when you start to here it all the time, it does affect your self-confidence. But as I alway say “I came prepared girl !” I was mentally prepared to overcome this shower of “OMG ! You gained so much weight”  or  “Wow I never knew you would become that fat !” and again these phrases came from family members. I knew they didn’t mean it in bad way but it could have had a negative impact on my self-esteem.

I refuse to let those comments be the reason to start losing weight. Two weeks ago when I was visited my Mom in Virginia, she said to me “SoSo you need to lose weight!” I kindly responded to stop putting pressure on me ! Kindly ok ? Relax  I wasn’t rude. I explained to her that it was already hard enough to hear it from other people and that the last thing I needed is to hear it from her too.

So you are probably wondering, “Soso if those comments didn’t bother you, why do you want lose weight then?!”  Well, the truth is since then, I have gain more weight. I have gained so much weight that now I am starting to feel uncomfortable in my skin. I am starting to feel self-conscious about my love handles and those beautiful chubby cheeks. That is why I decided to get on this “Chubz to fit” journey.

Besides, last year,  I have lost one of my Aunts to Heart attack. She was in her early 40s. This was such a painful and teachable time for me.  I made a vow to exercise, eat healthier to reduce the risk of getting chronic diseases such as heart attack, diabetes, high blood pressure…

So Ladies, my advice to you would be to evaluate your mindset first: Make sure you are doing it for you & your own well-being.  Start by asking yourself “Why do you want to lose weight?” and when you answer that question, question your answers again and again until you get to the core of “why” you really want to shed these pounds. Be real with yourself Darling ! (In my own voice)

If you get on this weight loss journey in order to please others or to fit societal standards, you will feel unhappy & discouraged very quickly. Fix your Mindset!
